Zimmer &amp;\nKallman 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Group:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Xiphophorus continens<\/em> is one of nine northern swordtails and belongs to the Montezumae clade, consisting of <em>X.\nmontezumae, X. nezahualcoyotl, X. continens<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Type\nLocality:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nacimiento of the Rio Ojo Frio at El\nQuince, north of Rascon, Rio Gallinas- Rio Panuco drainage, San Luis Potosi,\nMexico<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collected on April 27, 1984, by K. D.\nKallman and D. C. Morizo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distribution:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Headwaters of the Rio Ojo Frio, north of\nDamian Carmona, Rio Panuco drainage, San Luis Potosi. Mexico<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Populations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rio Ojo Frio, El Quince, San Luis Potosi.\nMexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Habitat:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast flowing river, with high aquatic\nvegetation with a stony river bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Size:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Males 2.5cm, Females 3.5cm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distinguishing\ncharacteristics:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> It is a small, slender species, with a slender&nbsp;caudal peduncle. The sword is barely noticeable with a maximum length of 1 millimetre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Colour\/Pattern\nVariability:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small slender species, the body colour is\npale golden brown with a darker brown midlateral stripe. There are one or two\nless prominent zigzag stripes above the midlateral stripe. The underneath\nsection is white from the mouth to the anal fin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dorsal and caudal fins are clear to\npale yellow, all other fins are clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Males\ndo not develop a sword greater than 1 mm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not a shy fish when settled, will happily\nswim around the front of the aquarium looking for food.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Husbandry:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A well planted aquarium with a temperature\nof 21 \u2013 22 degrees C<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breeding\nNotes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a gestation period of 24-28 days,\nfemale produces 10 to 20 young, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Remarks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall\nshape and appearance of this species is most similar to <em>X. pygmaeus<\/em> and was assumed to be closely related.
