Hubbs and M Gordon (1943)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Studies of cyprindonont fishes. 19. <em>Xiphophorus pygmaeus<\/em>, new species from\nMexico\u2019 Copeia 1943(1):31-3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Synonyms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Xiphophorus\npygmaeus pygmaeus <\/em>Rosen 1960<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Common\nname:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slender\nPygmy Swordtail<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>History:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collected by Myron Gordon and Salvador\nCoronado, April 14<sup>th<\/sup> 1939<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Group:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Xiphophorus pygmeaus<\/em> is one of the nine\nnorthern swordtails and belongs to the Pygmaeus clade consisting of consisting of <em>X. pygmaeus<\/em>, <em>X. nigrensis<\/em> and <em>X. multilineatus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Type\nlocality:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;R\u00edo\nAxtla of R\u00edo Panuco system, at Axtla, San Luis Potos\u00ed, Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distribution:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rio Axtla system, Rio Panuco drainage, SLP:\nabundant in Rio Huichihuayan, less common in lower 9 km of Rio Tancuilin and\nupper 5 km of Rio Axtla. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Populations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rio Axtla<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rio Huichihuayan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Habitat:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>X. pygmaeus is most commonly found in rivers\nor pools which have dense vegetation with overhanging banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Size:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Males 25mm &#8211; 30mm females 40mm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distinguishing\ncharacteristics:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A very small slender form of swordtail with\na very short sword. There are two male size variations. Ranging from 25mm to\n30mm standard length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Colour\/Pattern\nVariability:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Males<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nsingle bold lateral line runs from the eye. The colouration below the lateral\nline is white with a bluish tint, a pale blue stripe sits above the lateral\nline and the rest of the back is brown with the edges of the scales being\ndarker giving a net like appearance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nshort sword of generally less than 2mm but never more than 8mm, the sword does\nnot have black edging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dorsal fin in this species is short,\nboth in height and base length,\nthe fin is clear with a faint black edge and faint black band one third of the\nway up the fin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\nwith all of the Pygmaeus clade a yellow form can be found. This Yellow form has\nbeen fixed within the hobby and can easily be acquired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Females<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nsingle bold lateral line runs from the eye. The colouration below the lateral\nline is white with a bluish tint, a pale blue stripe sits above the lateral\nline and the rest of the back is brown with the edges of the scales being\ndarker giving a net like appearance. The females show a gravid spot<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ndorsal fin is clear with an extremely faint black edge and an extremely faint\nblack band one third of the way up the fin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A shy species that likes plenty of plant\ncover to feel secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Husbandry:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small aquarium well planted with an air\ndriven sponge filter or no filter but regular water changes. Plenty of Java\nmoss should be on the bottom of the aquarium<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breeding\nNotes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broods are born on a monthly cycle and\nnumber about 5 \u2013 10, fry are and normally left alone by the parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Middle-American poeciliid\nfishes of the genus&nbsp;<em>Xiphophorus<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bull.\nFla.
