Japanese Blue

First known article in publication found in a Japanese Fish Magazine in 1994. Believe it or not this was discovered in a Japanese river in the Kanagawa Prefecture in the late 1980's.
What makes this form so useful to breeders is their unique genetics, coming from a unique ferule stock. A drawback is their short lifespan being around one year.
Japanese breeders quickly put this form to work on discovery. In fact this 'new' discovery made a big impact in Japan. Yoshiki Tsutsui developed a Topaz ( or RRE Albino Japan Blue Neon Tuxedo) form. Prior to this they used Singapore Neon Blue.
A unique trait to this form are the blue iridophores (irridescent pigments) especially solid in the rear half of the body. It will be interesting to see if these remain solid in future generations. This form is starting to throw out many variants. The double red sword shown below is throwing out 3 distinct forms which are very interesting.
Asian breeders refer to this form as 'Aquamarine'.

This is a very useful form to have in the fish house. Many variants have been developed from it.
