Some books are out of print but it's well worth hunting in Amazon or E-Bay.

The Guppy - It's Life Cycle by William White Jnr.
An American book published in 1974.

I believe this book is now out of print but has been seen on E-Bay & went for a lot more than the original published price.
A good general book for anyone cutting their teeth on Guppies. Larger print which makes it easy for young children to take in. Many photos of gravid females, giving birth, close up shots of newborn fry with arrowed captions to body parts.

Guppy Handbook by Dr. C. W. Emmens.

An old book but considered very informative.

Guppies As Pets by Dr.Myron Gordon.
TFH Publications.

This is an old publication no doubt out of print now. Published in 1955 this small booklet starts off with general care & ends up with crossing experiments. One of the most comprehensive booklets on Guppies in its day. The information is as true today as it was back in the '50's.

My Guppy - Aqualog Mini by Frank Schäffer.
Hollywood Import & Export Inc.

Guppies - Keeping & Breeding Them in Captivity by Homer Mozart.
Chelsea House Publications.

Guppies Today by Spencer Glass.
Basic Domesticated Pet Library - Library Binding.

Not seen this book but reports suggest that it contains good quality photos.

Evolutionary Ecology - The Trinidadian Guppy by Anne E.Magurran.
Oxford University Press.

The Proper Care of Guppies by Stan Shubel
TFH Publications - ISBN 0-86622-615

Synopsis:
Written with remarkable clarity and illustrated with full-colour photos, The Proper Care of Guppies provides readers with all the basics of guppy ownership, from selecting the right variety to providing the best feeding, aquarium management and health care. Also provided are sensible commendations about establishing your own breeding line.

Review:
Now out of print, but occasionally available on Amazon, I consider that if you were only to purchase one guppy book this should be the one. My copy is the hardback version produced on quality paper with photographs that even though the book is 10 years old have not dated. Stan Shubel must really know his subject and has produced an easy and informative read. If I were to criticize, it is that the genetics side of the hobby is not very
well covered, otherwise everything you need is within the covers.

Genetics for Aquarists by Dr J. Schroder
ISBN 876664613

Synopsis:
Dealing the genetics of all tank raised livebearers, the book is intended to supply the interested aquarist with the necessary knowledge for systematic breeding.

Review:
A paperback book published in 1974 offers a very good explanation of fish genetics, in particular with regard to guppies. A mine of information, including a chapter on record keeping, this little book is very good value, often offered on Amazon for less than £2.

The Complete Guppy Fish Room by Phillip Shaddock.

" Guppy Development, Health & Disease
" Breeders Resource Book
" Breeding Strategies
" Color Series
" The Complete Guppy Fish Room

Synopsis:
The Guppy Designer series of books have been distributed to over 30 countries in the world, from Thailand, to Russia, from Mexico to Denmark. The advanced care and breeding information covers the latest theories in animal husbandry and genetics. This is the reason why the books have been purchased by the world's leading guppy breeders as well as the breeders of pigeons, dogs, bettas, reptiles and other animal species. It is simply the best and most up to date information source for the hobbyist and professional.

Review:
The fact that the series have the feel of being home produced with their spiral bindings is more than made up for by the content and has the added advantage that the author can update each time a new copy is produced. Since the series is available in single volumes or a complete set, I will review each volume in turn.

The Complete Guppy Fish Room: Deals with the setting up of a fish room and general fish care in a very full and in depth way. Perhaps of most use for someone coming to fish keeping for the first time, but even experts will find "nuggets" of useful information.

Guppy Development, Health & Disease: This volume surprised me, as well as disease details, something I find boring and am afraid only study as and when I have a problem, it has many interesting chapters on guppy development, nutrition, growth and fertility.

Breeding Strategies: Offers chapters on record keeping, judging, inbreeding etc.

Breeders Resource Book: If I were only going to buy one book in the series this would be it, without doubt the best book I have ever read on guppy genetics. After giving up on other books on genetics, I found this book to explain a complex subject in a very clear and informed way and even better for being guppy specific. In addition, the many up to date photographs of current strains and explanation of their genetics is a bonus.

Color Series: This book attempts to delve deeper into the colour structures of the guppy and is very detailed, perhaps a step too far for me with my present novice status.

Conclusion: Expensive and suffering a little from being US slanted, it is still without doubt the most comprehensive set of manuals for guppy breeding I have ever come across.I am pleased I bought the full set.

Guppies - Fancy Strains & How to Produce Them by Noboru Iwasaki.
ISBN 0-86622-702-4

Synopsis:
This book contains over 300 full-colour photographs, drawings and charts. Full text covers practical side
of day to day guppy maintenance and breeding programs.
Table of content includes: Basic equipment and knowledge * Feeding * Illnesses and their treatment * Classification and characteristics * Breeding techniques * Selecting the offspring * Special points of breeding * Guppy genetics.

Review:
My hardback copy does indeed contain many great photographs, but with the book being published
in 1989 they are now rather dated. True, the genetics of guppy breeding are well covered, but I feel that later publications now cover the subject better, again the illustrations are dated. All in all a good book
to have in your library, but not at some of the prices now being asked on Amazon.
